Narrative of a Fort: Castillo de san marco

I don’t know how long that I’ve been staying here, staying on a lonely coast...

My only friend here is the sea. We experienced the same storms, the same wars, and
the changes. I remembered the first time when I got confused, the sea told me your
obligation is to protect people, no matter how tough it is.

I asked the sea, why I can’t fly as a seagull; why I can’t move as a ship; why I can’t
have more freedom. I will see the whole world if I get freedom.

“I travelled a lot of places”, said the sea, “I travelled from mountains and rivers, and
finally I came here. It’s not hard to see the world, it is hard to feel the world, it is hard
to realize that how the world means to you.”

I used to get confused, however, after several hundreds of years, I’ve seen leaves
falling down season by season; I’ve seen seagulls passing here year by year; I’ve seen
people change generation after generation. No matter how many years passed by, I,
and the sea, we are still siting here.

When the wind roared on the storm, I sit tightly on the earth; when the thunder
screamed on the sky, I sit solidly on the earth; when the invaders desecrated the
sacred seashore; I still sit stably and defends the enemies with my firm shell. No
matter how the storm is strong, no matter how the wars is intensive, no matter how
many years passed by, my body is always the strongest shield to protect people and
the city behind me...
